If you want to get technical about it, the bulbous and brightly painted lump of concrete at the end of Whitehead Street marking the southernmost tip of the continental U.S. is not really the southernmost point on the island, but in laid-back Key West, technicalities mean little. In any case, if you book a room at the Southernmost Point Guest House around the corner on Duval Street, you’ll be bedding down about as close to Cuba as anyone can in the Keys without hiring a yacht.

The elegant 1885 Victorian with wraparound porches and a palm-shaded garden has six homey guest rooms and suites, some with kitchens, all with private bathrooms, air conditioning and direct-dial telephones. There’s a large hot tub in the garden, off-street parking is available, and unlike most Key West B&Bs, the Southernmost Point Guest House welcomes children and pets. Public beach access and the Duval Street commercial strip are within easy walking distance.

Double rates are reasonably affordable by local standards, ranging from $75 to $165 in summer, $115 to $265 in winter, continental breakfast included. Efficiency units have two double beds, and the master suite has a king-size bed and a fold-out sofa, though additional charges apply for more than two guests sharing a room.
