Santa Cruz Beach, California

Almost a century old and still going strong, this seaside amusement park 90 minutes south of San Francisco offers a pleasing mix of antique and modern carnival rides, family-oriented activities and a sandy beach fronting a fairly protected (but typically frigid) bay.

Inside Tip: Don't miss the old Looff Carousel (1911) and the Giant Dipper roller coaster (1924), both classified as National Historic Landmarks.
