Newport Hall of Fame
"Fame and Fortune"
The first National Championship tournament of the U.S. Lawn Tennis Association (now the USTA) was held in 1881 at the Newport Casino, then a spanking new recreational club for the wealthy elite who kept extravagant "summer cottages" here on the coast of Rhode Island.
In 1954, the historic structure designed by architect Stanford White became home to the International Tennis Hall of Fame, which now displays an unparalleled collection of tennis memorabilia. The museum is a great place to learn about the history of the game, but for a more hands-on experience, visitors are invited to take a turn on the world's oldest continuously used competition grass courts, which are open for public play by reservation only from mid-May through early October.
