For centuries, various Christian religious orders have maintained simple hostelries in Rome to provide shelter for spiritual pilgrims. Today, many are open to secular visitors as well. One of the most appealing for modern tourists is the Casa di Santa Brigida, part of a convent quite spectacularly located on the Piazza Farnese within easy walking distance of many of Rome's major historical attractions.

The sisters who run the place belong to the Bridgettine Order, founded on this site by a 14th-century mystic named Birgitta Persson who died here in 1373 and was later canonized as St. Bridget of Sweden. Some of the 24 comfortably furnished guest rooms offer views across the piazza to the Palazzo Farnese, perhaps Rome's most illustrious example of Renaissance architecture, and there's a lovely rooftop terrace where all guests can enjoy a magnificent Roman panorama.

Double rooms go for about 150 Euros per night, but if you want to find room at this inn, it's best to book well in advance and avoid major Christian holidays.
