Many of Rome's most famous attractions are historical, yet for all of its ancient ruins and venerable masterpieces of art and architecture, travelers should not overlook the city's lively urban charms. There's no better place to immerse yourself in contemporary Roman life than the daily market at Campo de' Fiori, a centrally located piazza where produce, meat and fish vendors have been hawking their wares for centuries.
Purveyors arrive early to set up their stalls, and throughout the morning the square is packed with jostling mix of locals provisioning for the day's meals and travelers snapping photos and picking through souvenir tables.
Look for flower vendors overflowing with bursts of color, breath deep as you pass the fragrant spice vendors, and don't forget to explore the periphery of the square where you'll find a tempting array of bakeries, cafes and food shops. Just remember to keep a tight grip on your wallet and camera, for the crowded marketplace is an attractive venue for opportunistic thieves.
By late afternoon the vendors are gone and the square has been thoroughly swept clean to make way for the Campo de' Fiori's other role as one of the city's most popular nighttime hangouts.
