Rome has such an embarrassment of cultural riches that many visitors fall into the trap of checking must-see sites off a list without really appreciating what they're seeing. Sure you want to make the most of your time there, but don't forget to take an occasional break and spend a quiet hour writing in your journal, sketching a pretty view or simply soaking in the sights and sounds of Roman life.
A delightful place to get away from it all is the Parco Savello, a peaceful walled garden on the Aventine hill just up from the Circus Maximus. The park itself, which is more commonly known as the Giardino degli Aranci, or Garden of the Orange Trees, is certainly not Rome's finest, but your trek up the Aventine will be rewarded with a sweeping view over the city and across the river to the dome of St. Peter's Basilica.
Take a deep breath, reflect on all you have experienced in Rome, and be thankful you're not among the crowds queuing up at the nearby Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin for a fleeting chance to stick their hands in the Mouth of Truth.
