While Maui does offer some bargain-basement accommodations, including basic hostels and state park campgrounds, it's difficult to find truly comfortable lodging on a nice beach without getting into triple-digit figures. One option is to pack several couples or a large family into a single condo, or shop around for an unpretentious gem like Nona Lani, which offers eight small cottages and three guest rooms across the road from one of the island's longest strands.

Each cottage at this family-run Kihei property has a bedroom, bathroom, sitting room, kitchen and lanai, with double rates as low as $95 a night. Three guest rooms on the ground floor of the family home have private entrances and private baths, with rates as low as $85 a night. All are managed with old-fashioned Hawaiian hospitality by resident owners Nona and David Kong, who raised their seven children on the pleasantly landscaped two-acre compound.

Accommodations do not include daily maid service or in-room telephones, but the attractive rates, desirable seaside location and warm welcome make this one of Maui's best bargains.
