Historic B&B Where to Stay in Maui: The Old Wailuku Inn at Ulupono
No beach is in sight at this atmospheric plantation-era home in Wailuku, the seat of Maui County, but there's no better place to stay if you want to get a taste of local life and history.
Innkeepers Janice and Thomas Fairbanks recently restored the 1920s mansion and converted it into an elegant inn that captures the feel of upper-class living in pre-World War II Hawaii. The shops and restaurants of Wailuku's quaint commercial district are within easy walking distance, and the Central Maui location makes Wailuku a good base for drives up the slopes of Haleakala, out the Hana Highway, or to beaches along the windward and leeward shores.
Each of the 10 guest rooms has a private bathroom, and each is furnished in distinctly local style. Some can be joined into family-size suites. Common areas include a comfortable living room, breakfast room, well-tended gardens and an inviting front porch. Double rates, including breakfast, range from $150 to $190 per night.
