In the 1800s, Lahaina was an important port of call for Pacific whaling ships, and several generations of crusty mariners knew it as a bawdy and sometimes violent place for shore leave. More recently, tourism has transformed the town into a busy collection of bars, restaurants, galleries and souvenir shops, with several small hotels and condominiums that make Lahaina an atmospheric alternative to the manicured beach resorts of nearby Kaanapali.
Tucked away in a relatively quiet garden near Lahaina's central waterfront, the Plantation Inn has 19 elegant rooms and suites in two Victorian-style buildings, with modern sound-proofing, air conditioning and bathrooms.
