Rolling greens at Montauk Downs

Location
Montauk, New York

Course Description
Originally opened as a private course in 1927, this 6,850-yard par 72 was substantially redesigned by Robert Trent Jones in 1968. It remained under private ownership until 1976 when the state acquired it and opened it to the public. Whipping Atlantic winds keep the game thrilling, while scenic views and top-condition greens make it worth the 128-mile trek from Manhattan.

What Makes It a Gem
Jones, along with son Rees, created a challenging course with rolling fairways, sculptured greens and strategically placed bunkers and ponds. At about $40 per game, it's affordable, too.
