Great Places to Stay: The Austin Motel

Click here to view a larger image.

Family owned and operated since 1938, the Austin Motel features plenty of amenities for the whole family, including this 50's style pool.

Don't expect top-drawer luxury at this humble vintage motel on South Congress Avenue, but for as little as $75 a night you can get a decent air-conditioned room with private bath at a terrific location in the trendy SoCo district.

The original motel structures and the cool neon sign date back to 1938, and a refreshing kidney-shaped pool was added in the 1950s. The property has 41 rooms and suites in various categories. The smallest and most basic rooms have one full-size bed, but larger and somewhat fancier set-ups are available, including two suites with separate living rooms, high ceilings, wet bars and Jacuzzi baths.

Rates (including tax) range from $75 to $158 depending on number of beds and location of the room. Street noise can be a problem in rooms that are closest to South Congress Avenue, so proceed with caution if you're a light sleeper.
