Great Places to Stay: Hotel San Jose

Opened in 1936, the San Jose Motel has remained true to its Texas roots by offering modern comfort with a twist of culture.

In the 1990s, this tired old motel and bungalow complex on South Congress Avenue was brought back to life as Austin's hippest hotel, with 40 rooms and suites decorated in cool, minimalist fashion. While the trendy atmosphere is not everyone's cup of tea, the San Jose has gained a loyal following among guests who adore the Zen-like gardens and pervasive sense of style.

Accommodations include double rooms with one or two queen-size beds, and several different suite configurations with separate sitting areas. If you're sensitive to traffic noise, ask for a room away from busy South Congress Avenue. The property has a small pool and a coffee and sandwich shop, with room service for breakfast only. Free high-speed Internet access is available in every room.

Double rooms go for $160 to $235 on weekdays, or $175 to $260 on weekends. Suites range from $280 to $335 on weekdays, $295 to $375 on weekends. Three small rooms sharing a bathroom rent for $90 on weeknights and $100 on weekends. A 20 percent discount off standard rates is extended to musicians who are playing gigs in Austin.
