Home Away From Home Great Places to Stay: The Mansion at Judges' Hill
This relative newcomer to the Austin lodging scene occupies a grand neoclassical home a few blocks from the capitol at the corner of MLK Boulevard and Rio Grande. Thomas Dudley Wooten, a prominent local physician and one of the original regents of the University of Texas, presented the house to his son and daughter-in-law as a wedding gift in 1900. More recently the building housed a drug and alcohol rehab center, but following extensive renovations, the property was reborn in 2003 as a refined 48-room boutique hotel.
The guest rooms, which are divided between the original mansion and a newer north wing, feature private baths and rich decor reminiscent of the property's Victorian roots. Public spaces include wide porches, a pleasant garden, an outdoor reception area for weddings and other events, and a well-regarded restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Rates start around $139 for rooms in both the main house and the north wing; specials and packages are available starting at $209 a night.
