One of the nicest things about this illustrious winter sports destination in southwestern Switzerland -- aside from the fantastic skiing and magnificent scenery, of course -- is the complete absence of automobiles, motorcycles or anything else with an internal combustion engine. That means you can ski, stroll, dine, shop and just plain relax in an atmosphere of blissful peace and quiet.
At 14,688 feet above sea level, the craggy peak of the Matterhorn rises over three marvelous ski areas, with close to 250 miles of downhill runs served by an extensive network of lifts, trams and mountain railways. The high altitude and glacial terrain combine with artificial snow-making equipment to assure abundant white stuff throughout the winter season, with some glacier runs open year-round. The village offers a full range of accommodations and services, with local transportation on quiet electric buses and taxis or romantic horse-drawn carriages.
