According to the National Council on Problem Gambling (www.ncpgambling.org), some three million Americans in a given year can be described as pathological gamblers, and millions more experience less significant but equally serious problems controlling their betting habits. Odds are you won’t become a gambling addict during a brief visit to Las Vegas, but if you plan to spend time in the casinos during your stay, a certain amount of caution is in order.

Before you hit the slots or the tables, remind yourself that all casino gaming is structured to favor the house. Big payouts do happen, but casinos only earn a profit by keeping more money than they give back. If you get lucky and win big, consider quitting while you’re ahead. If you lose, just make sure your child’s college education isn’t on the line.

The best protection against problem gambling is to set a strict limit on how much money you’re willing to lose. Set aside that amount for use in the casinos, and make a promise to yourself that you’ll walk away as soon as your gaming budget is depleted. If you stick to this simple rule and go easy on the free drinks, you can’t get yourself into any serious trouble.
