Homegrown Luxury Great Places to Stay: Huntington Hotel
When this stately hotel at the top of Nob Hill first opened its doors in 1924, it was considered the height of modern style and luxury, and its location in a neighborhood favored by the city's wealthy elite made it one of the most fashionable addresses in town. Eighty-four years later, the Huntington is still owned and operated by third-generation heirs of founder Eugene Fritz, and it remains a favorite choice for movie stars, political figures and other VIPs who seek a high level of service, discretion and comfort.
Although the 12-story Georgian-style brick building retains the formal elegance of pre-Depression San Francisco, thorough renovation over the years has brought the 136 rooms and suites up to modern standards, with safes, fax machines, dual-line telephones, complimentary Internet access and individual climate control available in every room. The decor is strictly traditional, and because the building was originally designed as an apartment hotel, the rooms are unusually spacious. Some even have small kitchens.
Double room rates can be pricey, reaching upwards of $1,200 a night. Various packages are available that combine accommodations with such extras as special meals, chauffeured transportation around town or access to the adjacent Nob Hill Spa.
