Quintessential Experiences: Beach Blanket Babylon

When San Franciscans are entertaining visitors from out of town, they're not likely to accompany their guests to Fisherman's Wharf, but an evening at Beach Blanket Babylon is another story altogether. This wacky, only-in-San-Francisco musical revue and parody of popular culture has been entertaining locals and tourists alike for 34 years, with a constantly evolving mix of outrageous characters, hilariously satirical songs, gaudy costumes and famously oversized hats.

The show is housed at Club Fugazi, a 400-seat cabaret-style theater in North Beach, with performances scheduled on most Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 6:30 and 9:30 p.m., and Sundays at 2 and 5 p.m. Children are welcome at Sunday matinees, but you must be 21 or older to attend evening performances. Ticket prices range from $25 to $78 depending on the seating area and day of the performance.

Given the show's extraordinary popularity, it's usually best to book your tickets at least a month in advance. See www.beachblanketbabylon.com for details.
