Built in the 19th century, rooms at Boston’s Harborside Inn have high ceilings, hardwood floors and exposed granite and brick walls.

Despite its name, the Harborside Inn is not right on the water, but this humble alternative to the nearby Boston Harbor Hotel enjoys a privileged location adjacent to Faneuil Hall in the very heart of downtown Boston. Although some guests have been known to complain about noise from late-night revelers on this busy block, the renovated 19th-century mercantile building is a good and reasonably affordable choice if you like to be in the middle of the action.

The hotel offers 54 rooms and suites surrounding an eight-story interior atrium, with hardwood floors, exposed brick walls, queen beds, Federal-style furnishings and oriental rugs. If you're likely to be bothered by street noise, ask for a room facing the atrium, where you'll sacrifice exterior views for a quieter night's rest.

Doubles rates generally range from about $119 to $179, with the higher end of the scale applying to city-view rooms and periods of peak demand. Room service is available, and the hotel has a bistro restaurant on the ground floor, but there are plenty of other dining options in the neighborhood as well.
