Bargain Buys Quintessential Experiences: Filene's Basement
Started in 1908 by Edward A. Filene as a way to unload remaindered merchandise from his father's department store, this venerable downtown discount shop is famous for its automatic markdown system in which prices drop by 25-percent increments the longer an item remains on the shelves.
With its crowded aisles and functional, no-nonsense approach to retailing, Filene's is not for the faint-hearted shopper. With a sporting attitude, a strong constitution and a little luck, you really can find some terrific bargains here on high-quality merchandise. Clothing for men, women and children takes up most of the space, but Filene's Basement also sells bedding, bath and body products, fragrances, luggage and housewares.
The store is open daily except Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter and is easily accessible by public transportation.
