Boston's Logan International Airport (www.massport.com/logan) is conveniently located just a few miles from downtown, and a variety of transportation services are available for fast ground transfers throughout the metropolitan area. But if you're looking for discount air fares, consider checking flights into two other airports where longer ground transfers can translate into cheaper plane tickets.

T.F. Green Airport (www.pvd-ri.com) outside Providence, R.I., is about an hour's drive south of Boston on Interstate 95. Express service to Boston's South Station bus terminal takes about an hour and costs $34 round-trip, or you can take a taxi to the Amtrak station in nearby Warwick and catch a train to Boston.

Manchester Airport (www.flymanchester.com) across the border in southern New Hampshire is also about an hour away from Boston, though ground transportation options are more limited.

Most major online travel agencies include a "nearby airports" option for flight searches, making it easy to compare rates and schedules for all three airports. Bear in mind, however, that some low-cost airlines cannot be booked through the normal online agencies. Southwest Airlines, for example, serves both Manchester and Providence, but their flights are not listed on other travel sites.
