Club de Golf Valderrama Sotogrande, Spain
Brace yourself for a challenging day on the fairways when you head for this classy private club in southern Spain, home of a marvelous par 71 championship course that is routinely ranked among the top golfing destinations on the European continent.
Robert Trent Jones, Sr. designed the original course in 1974, then significantly revised and expanded the layout in 1984. Valderrama has since hosted a number of high-profile competitions, including the 1997 Ryder Cup and the 1999 and 2000 American Express World Golf Championships. All 18 holes offer a good range of tee locations, with lovely Andalusian scenery throughout and nine distinct wildlife sanctuaries certified by Audubon International.
Although Valderrama is a membership club, a limited number of tee times are open to nonmembers between noon and 2 pm. Green fees are around 250 euros (about $325) on weekdays, or 275 euros (about $369) on weekends. Full-day packages offered for groups of 20 or more players combine a round of 18 holes with an additional nine holes on Valderrama's short par 3 course, plus brunch, a four-course dinner, cart rental and use of practice facilities, all for about 400 euros per person.
