True golf enthusiasts view this medieval village 50 miles northeast of Edinburgh as hallowed ground, for St. Andrews is the legendary birthplace of golf, and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club founded here in 1754 remains the leading international authority on the rules of the game. The St. Andrews Links comprise six public courses, five with 18 holes and one nine-hole course, the Balgrove, appropriate for children and beginners.

By far the most coveted tee time to get in St. Andrews is for the Old Course, said to be the oldest golf course in the world and the place where the game was first played some 600 years ago. Advance booking requests are accepted by fax or by email starting the first Wednesday in September for tee times throughout the following year, and a limited number of tee times are made available in a daily lottery for the following day's play (or Monday play for the Saturday draw). Green fees vary seasonally from 52 to 115 pounds (about $100 to $220).

The New Course was added in 1895 to accommodate growing demand for golf at St. Andrews, followed by the Jubilee Course, which originally opened as a 12-hole layout in 1897, and the Eden Course was added in 1913. The 1993 Strathtyrum Course is the shortest and most forgiving of the St. Andrews Links. Tee times at these four courses are much easier to book, yet each offers a satisfying traditional layout with green fees ranging seasonally from 16 to 55 pounds (about $30 to $105). Multi-day, multi-course tickets are available as well, plus reduced rates for golfers under 16 years old.
