Cabo Real Golf Course Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
Over the past 30 years, a government-sponsored tourism development initiative has transformed the southern tip of Mexico's Baja peninsula into a major international resort destination, with seven championship golf courses lined up along the 20-mile resort corridor between Cabo San Lucas and neighboring San Jose del Cabo. The Cabo Real Golf Course, a Robert Trent Jones II design unveiled in 1993, takes full advantage of the magnificent setting where rugged mountains and sublime desert scenery meet wide, sandy beaches along the Sea of Cortez.
The front nine holes at Cabo Real climb through the desert to a point 460 feet above sea level, with some tricky elevated greens and cactus-plant hazards. The back nine leads players down to sea level, with a memorable 15th hole set right along a beach where surf crashes into wave-worn rock formations. Every hole offers expansive sea views, and from January through March, there's a good chance you'll see California gray whales spouting offshore.
The course is part of an expansive resort development that encompasses seven hotels and one other golf course, the newer Jack Nicklaus-designed El Dorado. The green fee for 18 holes at Cabo Real is around $220 USD from October through May, $155 USD from June through September, with lower twilight fees in effect after 3 pm. Preferential tee times and various golf packages are available to guests of on-site hotels.
