Hotels

  • Rock Hotel, dating back to 1932, has a British colonial feel with ceiling fans, greenery in its lobby and a very proper afternoon tea. The level of service is the best in Gibraltar, with nice little touches such as a welcoming sherry on arrival. All 104 rooms have been renovated recently, but be sure to ask for one with an unobstructed view of the sea. There's a pleasant wisteria shaded terrace, a seawater swimming pool and a pretty good restaurant. Doubles from about $240 USD.

  • Eliott Hotel is centrally located and recently refurbished. It feels more modern than the Rock Hotel, but the rooms (114) are about the same standard. Be careful when booking, as some of the rooms do not have sea views and their baths are small. Facilities include a heated rooftop swimming pool, sauna, a gym, two restaurants and a comfortable bar. Doubles from about $210 USD.

  • Caleta Palace Hotel, about 15 minutes from the center of town, is situated on a rocky promontory overlooking Catalan Bay. Although it doesn't have the reputation of the Rock or the Eliott, it's been recently refurbished, and the rooms — especially the two very affordable suites — are quite comfortable. The main attraction, however, is the hotel's location right on the Mediterranean; you'll wake to the sound of the surf below. Doubles from $180 USD.

Dining

  • Meson Jabugo specializes in a range of Andalusian dishes, including excellent jabugo and serrano ham, paella and seafood. You can dine in the bar area or the main restaurant, which opens out onto the pavement in the warm weather. From the solid wine list, try the Campillo Reserva. Dinner for two, without wine, about $55 USD.

  • The Waterfront, at the Queensway Quay development, offers a wide variety of seafood, though only the shellfish is locally caught. In summer months, the entire restaurant moves outdoors, and barbecue is featured. Dinner for two, without wine, about $60 USD.

  • The Angry Friar is a small pub located on Convent Square. Great for a slap-up English breakfast as well as a full menu of pub favorites, including bangers and mash, kidney pie, scampi and chips and terrific hot apple pie. There's a lovely terrace facing the square where the changing of the guards takes place. Dinner for two, without beverage, about $40 USD.
