- The Old Course Hotel is actually a modern and luxurious property that backs up to the Old Course golfing club in the city. Its 134 rooms and suites are tastefully furnished, comfortable and equipped with first-class amenities. The Eden Parkland rooms, which are flooded with light throughout the day, are particularly nice. Service in the hotel is superb, whether you're a golfer or not. - St. Andrews Bay Resort, high on a cliff, is another newly constructed property focused on its world-class spa. There are 209 large comfortable rooms with large and well-designed bathrooms. Dining
- At a crossroads about five miles from St. Andrews, the unpretentious-looking Peat Inn is renowned for excellent classic Scottish fare. Its pork roast served with sausage and apricot stuffing is divine, as are its smoked fish soup and halibut filet with herb sauce. Save room for a chocolate pot de crème with rosemary. The single malt selection is inspiring. Dinner for two, without beverage, about $ 80 USD.

- The Vine Leaf Restaurant offers a large selection of beef, game and seafood in a casually comfortable town house. Start with an onion and Gruyere tart or baked Loch Fyne oysters, and then the seared Scottish salmon with codfish cake; the game pie served in a mushroom and tomato sauce; the Scottish beef fillet or any of two dozen other starters and mains, including several vegetarian choices. There's also a large selection of wines from around the world as well as house varieties from Chile's Cachapoal Valley. Dinner for two, before wine, about $90 USD.
