New Digs Great Places to Stay: Hotel Providence
This spanking-new boutique hotel made a big splash when it opened in January 2005, in part because it also became the new home of one of the Providence's most celebrated restaurants. L'Epicureo Ristorante, which originally occupied a converted butcher shop in Federal Hill, has moved its critically acclaimed Italian kitchen into spacious and elegant accommodations here in the up-and-coming downtown historic zone known as the Downcity Arts and Entertainment District.
The Hotel Providence preserves two adjoining 19th-century brick buildings that have been completely renovated to house 80 guest rooms and suites outfitted with modern communications and entertainment systems. The stylish interiors combine fine antiques with historically accurate finishings, original artwork, pillow-top beds and elegantly appointed bathrooms. In addition to L'Epicureo, the hotel has a grand 2,200-square-foot ballroom and three additional meeting rooms.
Rack rates range from $159 to $319 for double rooms, $249 to $529 for suites. "Romance in Providence" packages with rates beginning at $399 per couple feature accommodations at the hotel, dinner for two at L'Epicureo, a box of chocolates, a bottle of Champagne and continental breakfast.
