Leisure travelers in particular might want to consider bedding down a short distance from Providence to enjoy a taste of small-town New England. The Bristol Harbor Inn sits right on Narragansett Bay in an atmospheric maritime district known as Thames Street Landing, where a group of historic downtown buildings has been transformed into a boardwalk-style complex of waterfront shops and restaurants. About half an hour from Providence by car, this quiet location offers easy access to Newport and other attractions along the coast of Rhode Island.
The inn has 40 rooms and suites in various configurations, all with private bathrooms and cheerful colonial-style décor. While the original buildings date back as far as 1797, renovations completed in 2001 added thoroughly modern amenities, including new plumbing, cable TV, in-room telephones and free high-speed Internet access. Many rooms offer lovely views of the bay and waterfront. Several restaurants are located right at the landing, or you can take a stroll through downtown Bristol for additional dining options.
Rates are highest during the summer/fall high season, with harbor-view rooms commanding the highest prices throughout the year. Double-occupancy rates range from $89 to $129 in low season, and from $119 to $249 from May through October, with some package rates that include dinner at the new DeWolf Tavern.
