Pride of Pawtucket Travel Tips: Rhode Island's Red Sox
Baseball fans visiting Providence from April through early September should not miss the opportunity to catch a game of the Pawtucket Red Sox, the Triple-A farm team of 2004 World Series champion Boston Red Sox. Although much less famous than their major league counterparts, the PawSox earned a place in the record books in 1981 when their 33-inning match against the Rochester Red Wings became the longest game on record. The PawSox won three runs to two.
Home games are played at McCoy Stadium in suburban Pawtucket, a short drive north of central Providence. With only 10,000 seats and a loyal local fan base, this is baseball as it was meant to be enjoyed outdoors, up-close, full of spirit and eminently affordable.
General admission seats cost $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and children age 12 and under. Or you can splurge on box seats for a whopping $9. Wherever you sit, the 1942 vintage stadium is a comfortable place for spectators thanks to extensive renovations that have brought the facility up to Class AAA standards. For schedules and ticket information, see the PawSox Web site at www.pawsox.com.
