Opened in 2001, the Lodge at Torrey Pines has quickly earned a reputation as one of the finest places to stay in the San Diego area, combining stylish accommodations with first-class service, lovely coastal views, a posh health spa and exquisite dining at the resort's well-regarded A.R. Valentien restaurant. The earthy Craftsman architectural style popularized in early 20th-century California inspired this sybaritic 171-room retreat, which sits alongside the 18th fairway and green of La Jolla's Torrey Pines Golf Course.

The least expensive "Signature" rooms facing a landscaped courtyard are nice enough, but if money is no object, book one of the Palisades rooms overlooking the golf course and the sea. Either way, be sure to ask about package deals, especially if you plan to enjoy the in-house spa services or take advantage of guaranteed tee times on the Torrey Pines Golf Course. One word of warning: Don't be surprised by the occasional roar of military jets on training missions along the coast.

You could easily spend your entire visit on the 6.5-acre grounds, the golf course and the adjacent Torrey Pines State Reserve. If you want get off the grounds, the lodge offers complimentary transportation via chauffeured Mercedes anywhere within a five-mile radius (including downtown La Jolla). However, downtown San Diego is about a 20-minute drive south on Interstate 5.
