You can find cheaper accommodations in San Diego, but few places offer such a winning combination of reasonable rates, comfy quarters, desirable location and authentic sense of style and whimsy. The complex of four converted Spanish-Colonial apartment buildings a few blocks from the gay-friendly Hillcrest commercial district harbors 26 individually decorated rooms and suites that are a step up from the average bed and breakfast, yet more affordable than a typical boutique hotel. The San Diego Zoo and other Balboa Park attractions are within easy walking distance.

At the bottom end of the rate scale are four smaller units that rent for $99 a night, all clean and cozy with queen-size beds and private bathrooms. Spend a bit more ($149 to $219 a night) and you can choose from a variety of larger suites, some with kitchens and/or large whirlpool tubs. Decorative motifs range from traditional to fanciful, including the Tarzan-themed Greystoke suite and the Asian-inspired Orient Express suite. Consider choosing a unit with a private patio where you can enjoy the complimentary continental breakfasts, which are delivered daily to all guests.

Rates are for double occupancy, though children age 11 and under stay free with their parents, and some units can accommodate additional guests for $10 per person, per night. No off-street parking is available, but free on-street spaces are generally easy to find in the neighborhood.
