Here's a fun alternative to staying in a seaside hotel: The Harbor Vacations Club offers overnight accommodations aboard a small fleet of private yachts and upscale houseboats docked at Harbor Island, a waterfront development just south of the airport and minutes from downtown San Diego. Don't expect room service and other hotel amenities, but these vessels come with most of the comforts of home despite the lack of terra firma underfoot.

Accommodations vary according to the type of vessel, but all have private staterooms, televisions, stereo systems, dining areas and outdoor seating where you can enjoy your morning coffee and evening sundowners. Most affordable is a 32-foot sailing catamaran that sleeps four in two double berths, with a rustic sailing shower onboard and access to real showers at the marina. The motor yachts and houseboats in the fleet cost more but offer more spacious accommodations, fully equipped galleys, real bathrooms and in most cases, onboard laundry facilities.

Rates include breakfast, and for an extra fee, guests staying aboard one of the sail or motor yachts can arrange to take their home away from home out for a skippered cruise during the day.
