Georgian Terrace Atlanta: Top 5 Hotels
When the movie version of Gone With the Wind premiered in 1939, MGM selected this 1911 luxury hotel to host the film's gala release party and to accommodate stars Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable. Following a thorough renovation in the 1990s, the historic structure was converted into private apartments, but it has since been returned to hotel service with 319 guest rooms and apartment-like suites located near the North Avenue MARTA rail station in Midtown Atlanta. While you might have to overlook some of the quirks of staying in an older building, the hotel offers classy vintage atmosphere, spacious accommodations and luxury-class amenities at relatively modest rates.
Various room configurations are available including one-, two- and three-bedroom suites with full kitchens and laundry facilities. Ask for a south-facing suite on one of the upper floors for great views of the Atlanta skyline, or on the east side for views of Stone Mountain. Even if you don't score a room with a view, all guests can enjoy a panoramic vista from the rooftop pool and sundeck. If you have a car, remember to budget an extra $25 or so daily for hotel parking.
The historic Fox Theatre (www.foxtheatre.org), an extravagant 1920s movie palace that remains one of Atlanta's top performing arts venues, is right across the street, making it easy to combine your stay with a concert, opera or dance performance. Neighborhood restaurants offer a range of enticing and affordable alternatives to hotel dining.
