Hotel Indigo Atlanta: Top 5 Hotels
This unusual Midtown property debuted in October 2004 as the first in a new chain of hip urban hotels designed to inject moderately priced lodging with a healthy dose of metropolitan style. The 140-room property lacks many of the services and amenities of more expensive hotels, but for about $125-$150 a night you'll get a big, comfortable bed in a compact but smartly decorated room, with a great location near the North Avenue MARTA rail station.
The Indigo occupies a rather ordinary 12-story brick building from the 1920s. Beyond the neoclassical facade, however, this former Days Inn has been thoroughly redecorated in a playful, eclectic style. The decor combines highly traditional elements (hardwood floors, area rugs, crown molding, ornate chandeliers) with cheerful colors, photographic murals of oversized fruits and flowers, and a fanciful mix of cozy furnishings, including the chain's signature stylized Adirondack chairs with wide, table-like arms. The bathrooms are tiny, but nicely outfitted with modern fixtures (showers only, no tubs).
The Indigo has a casual restaurant on the ground floor and no room service, with numerous other dining options in the neighborhood. Parking is available for an additional $20 or so per night, but space is limited, and at this location you might be better off doing without a car anyway. When planning your stay, don't forget to check what's showing across the street at the Fox Theatre (www.foxtheatre.or), a fabulous 1920s movie palace that hosts a variety of concerts, opera and dance performances.
