In a city largely overwhelmed by modern high-rises and suburban sprawl, this Victorian mansion in the Midtown district north of downtown offers visitors a refined taste of vintage Atlanta. Resident innkeepers Ed and Debbie McCord welcome guests to their elegant 1891 home, which features original stained, leaded and beveled glass, intricately carved woodwork, period wall treatments and hand-painted stenciling. Guests also have access to several parlors, porches and other public areas, including a sweet second-floor veranda overlooking the back garden.
Antique furnishings and oriental rugs give the guest rooms and public areas an authentic Victorian feel, yet all accommodations have private bathrooms with modern fixtures, central heating and air conditioning, cable TV, CD players and in-room telephones with Internet data ports. Five rooms and suites are available in the main house, or for maximum privacy, book the carriage house suite tucked away in the garden. In winter, ask to stay in the Downing Room, which has its own fireplace.
Rates at the Shellmont include an elaborate Southern breakfast served in two daily seatings in the McCord's formal dining room. The inn is located about halfway between the North Avenue and Midtown MARTA rail stations and a short drive from downtown Atlanta.
