This unique attraction in Grant Park next to Zoo Atlanta is centered around a massive panoramic painting depicting the July 1864 Battle of Atlanta, billed as the largest oil painting in the world and the longest running show in the United States. Completed in 1886 by a team of 11 artists from Germany, the Civil War scene was designed to be viewed from a rotating platform inside a 50-foot-high cylindrical room. It has been on display at in Atlanta almost continuously since 1893.

Guided visits begin with a short video presentation about the battle, after which guests are ushered into the Cyclorama to view the painting, which has been enhanced with a three-dimensional foreground diorama as well as music, sound effects and narration in five languages. The facility also houses an impressive collection of Civil War artifacts, including a full-size steam locomotive used in the April 1862 "Great Train Race" when Confederate troops chased down and recaptured another locomotive that had been taken by Union raiders.

The museum is open daily from 9 am to 4:30 pm, with 40-minute Cyclorama shows scheduled every half hour. Admission is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors, $5 for ages 6 to 12, free for children under 6. See www.bcaatlanta.com for details, or call 404-624-1071 or 404-658-7625.
