The best way to save money on the Black Course is to establish New York residency, as resident green fees are significantly lower than nonresident fees. Assuming that's not an option for you, nonresident rates are still quite reasonable at $78 on weekdays, or $98 on weekends. In any case, there's a good chance you'll end up on one of the other Bethpage courses, all of which cost significantly less to play.

If you're determined to play the Black and don't mind the inconvenience and uncertainty of trying for a same-day, walk-up tee time, consider scheduling your visit for late spring or early fall when air fares and hotel rates are likely to be somewhat lower, particularly if you can be flexible about flight schedules, advance-purchase requirements and Saturday night stays. If possible, plan to spend several days in the area in case you don't manage to get a tee time on your first or second attempts.

Bethpage is accessible by commuter rail from Penn Station in Manhattan, but given the cumulative cost of train fares plus taxi rides between Bethpage Station and the clubhouse (not to mention the hassle of schlepping your clubs), renting a car is a much better option. Try to get the biggest car you can afford, as it will be your only comfort in those dark early-morning hours when you're waiting for the clubhouse to open.
