Torrey Pines is about 20 miles north of downtown San Diego, easily accessible from San Diego International Airport and close to a wealth of other attractions in the greater San Diego area. The course operates year-round, though you can expect more crowded conditions during peak summer months. From December through April there's a somewhat greater chance of rain, though rain-outs are rare in this generally mild and sunny part of California. Bear in mind also that the course is closed to public play each winter for the Buick Invitational in January or February.

San Diego offers a wide range of accommodations in various price ranges, and there's really no need to stay right next to the clubhouse, but if you can afford a room at the Lodge at Torrey Pines (www.lodgetorreypines.com), you won't be disappointed. Even the most affordable weekday golf packages at this lovely property overlooking the 18th green of the South Course will set you back more than $500 a night, but it's an easy way to get a guaranteed tee time, and your day on the links will begin with a thoroughly civilized stroll from the hotel entrance to the clubhouse.
