For out-of-towners, having a friend in San Diego is one good way to save money at Torrey Pines. San Diego County residents with specially issued golf ID cards pay significantly lower green fees, and are permitted to bring nonresident companions for resident prices. If you don't know any local golfers, go for weekday tee times, which are significantly cheaper than weekends. Rates drop 50 percent at twilight to a weekday low of $70 for nonresident packages on the North Course, or $92.50 on the South Course. You'll also save some cash if you play as a stand-by golfer, as you'll avoid the reservations fees and package costs associated with advance bookings.

When booking your flight to San Diego, don't forget to check discount carriers like Jet Blue and Southwest, which are not listed on most online reservations systems, and unless you're making last-minute arrangements after scoring a tee time in the seven-day lottery, book well ahead to take advantage of advance-purchase discounts. You will certainly need a car in San Diego, so check for savings on air/car packages as well.

As for lodging, there are plenty of budget motels within easy driving distance of Torrey Pines. For the best rates on accommodations, avoid busy summer weekends, and bear in mind that properties on or near the beach are generally more expensive than places farther inland. For a good selection of moderately priced chain motels about 10 miles south of La Jolla, check out the Hotel Circle area along Interstate 8 between Interstate 5 and Highway 163. If you plan to stay over a weekend, check for discount deals at downtown business hotels, which frequently offer appealing weekend packages.
