Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park New York City: Top 5 Hotels
After the faded old St. Moritz Hotel at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Central Park South closed for good in the late 1990s, developers gutted the building and embarked on a comprehensive renovation plan that reduced the overall room count and transformed the property into an exquisite new addition to the Ritz-Carlton chain. Manhattan has no shortage of top-drawer luxury hotels, but few can equal the Ritz-Carlton's winning combination of attentive service, traditional decor, state-of-the-art infrastructure and a privileged Midtown location facing the southern end of Central Park.
In its new incarnation, the landmark structure houses 261 spacious rooms and suites furnished in conservative Old World style. There's also a La Prairie spa, an intimate lobby lounge and a sophisticated French restaurant, Atelier, which has earned numerous accolades from local restaurant critics.
The lowest rates are for "interior view" rooms on the back side of the building, but if your budget allows, consider upgrading to a premium room overlooking the park. Either way you'll enjoy high-end amenities, high-tech entertainment and communications systems, inviting beds outfitted with posh 300-thread-count Frette linens, and the occasional celebrity sighting in the hotel's elegant public areas.
