Return to City Guide: Martha's Vineyard

Rented mopeds — low-powered scooters that do not require a motorcycle license to operate — have long been a popular means of transportation on Martha's Vineyard, but on the island's narrow, winding roads, mopeds also can be a good way to land in the hospital or the morgue. If you have little or no experience with motor bikes, consider renting a car or bicycle instead, or make use of the island's abundant taxis and public buses.

If you do rent a moped, ask the dealer to give you a thorough orientation to the machine, followed by a road test to make sure you're a competent rider. When you're on the road, keep these important safety tips in mind:

— Wear a helmet at all times, and never exceed the island-wide moped speed limit of 25 mph.

— In high season, many cars and SUVs on Vineyard roadways are piloted by visitors who are not familiar with the terrain, and who may misjudge the width of the pavement or the severity of a curve. Defensive driving is crucial.

— Sand or gravel on the road surface is a particular hazard for two-wheel vehicles, and you won't always be able to see the slippery patches until you're already on them. Try to avoid situations where you must turn or slow down suddenly.

— Finally, if at any time you feel uncertain about your abilities, don't hesitate to return the moped and find another way to get around. For more about moped safety and alternative means of transportation, see www.mvmopeds.com.
