This comfortable and reasonably affordable boutique hotel is a good bet for travelers who want to stay right on the Sonoma Plaza. The 27 rooms occupy a fully updated mid-19th-century commercial building at the northwest corner of the square, and while the accommodations are not particularly spacious, all rooms have private bathrooms and clean, modern décor, with flat-screen TVs, CD players, cordless telephones and small refrigerators. The property also offers a heated outdoor lap pool, and a freshly remodeled restaurant with indoor dining and in a festive enclosed courtyard.
One of the best things about staying at the El Dorado is that all of the shops, restaurants and historical attractions of downtown Sonoma are within easy walking distance. Bear in mind, however, that a certain amount of nighttime noise is inevitable here in the heart of town. Double rates range from $145 to $190, with the best deals available on weekdays and during the off season from November through April.
