Milan, Teatro alla Scala Wondrous Destinations
Giuseppe Verdi's exquisite operatic rendering of William Shakespeare's Othello was a sensational hit when it debuted at the Teatro alla Scala in 1887. More than a century later, audiences are still deeply moved by the intense emotions and sumptuous scoring of the work, and there's something particularly enchanting about seeing Otello staged in the very hall where it was first performed. Recent renovations have made La Scala a more appealing space for audience members and performers alike, but the elegant 18th-century architecture has lost none of its vintage charm. Until Otello next returns to La Scala, look for other operas by Verdi or his contemporary, Giacomo Puccini, both of whom brought numerous great works to the stage in Milan.
