Tanzania, Ngorongoro Crater Wondrous Destinations
Given the exceptional variety and density of wild animal populations in this 100-square-mile reserve, there's really no bad time for a game-viewing excursion into Tanzania's Ngorongoro Crater. But if you set out early in the morning, when a cool mist hangs over the valley floor and many of the indigenous creatures are more active than in the daytime, chances are good you'll experience a truly marvelous slice of East African wildlife. Elephants, hippos, zebras, gazelle, wildebeest, baboons and black rhinos are frequently spotted, along with lions, cheetahs, hyenas and great flocks of flamingos on Lake Magadi at the lowest point of the caldera. Be sure to check your gadget bag before setting out, as this is one excursion where you'll certainly need plenty of extra film or memory cards for your camera.
