In recent years, the return of political stability to war-torn Cambodia has made the spectacular ruins of Angkor more accessible than ever, with unprecedented multitudes of international tourists arriving by air during the winter high season. Generally cool and dry conditions from November through February make winter the most comfortable time to visit, and by heading out after an early breakfast, it's possible to explore the most popular sites before tour group congestion sets in. As you visit the temple compounds left behind by the ancient Khmer civilization, remember that the beauty of Angkor exists on several levels — not only in the picture-postcard panoramas of Angkor Wat and other extensively restored structures, but also in the fine decorative details of stonework throughout the ruins, and in the evocative state of decay at sites that remain partially consumed by verdant jungle.
