Peru, Machu Picchu Wondrous Destinations
Most visitors to this celebrated pre-Columbian archaeological site in the Peruvian Andes arrive on day trips from the city of Cuzco. Spend a night or two in the vicinity of the ruins, however, and you'll be able to witness the incomparable beauty of dawn breaking over the ancient Inca outpost. One upscale (and very expensive) hotel, the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge, is located adjacent to the entrance gate, and there are several inns with a range of price tags in the nearby Machu Picchu Village (a.k.a. Aguas Calientes). Either way, you'll be close enough for an early-morning outing, unencumbered by the crowds of day-trippers and tour groups that flock to the mountain during the midday hours.
