Pura Vida — Spanish for "pure life" — is a 12-acre tropical retreat that stays true to its name with an emphasis on spirit-enhancing yoga, physically challenging eco-adventures and health-conscious cuisine. Set on the edge of a mountainside coffee field, the retreat offers a feast for the senses, beginning with awe-inspiring views of Costa Rica's central valley and Irazú, Barva and Poás volcanoes.
The Services
Organized meditation and yoga classes are offered in five foliage-surrounded halls. Equally invigorating (albeit mat-free) pursuits include coffee field hikes, salsa dancing lessons and exotic bird-watching excursions. On half- and full-day eco-adventures, guests white-water raft through spectacular rainforest canyons on the Rio Pacuare; explore at 8,000 feet atop one of the world's deepest active volcanoes; and swim and diving at Punta Leona, a white sand beach on the Pacific Coast.
Pura Vida's wellness center options include hot-stone and deep- tissue therapies, volcanic-clay facials, astrology sessions and rose-petal massages. In the spa's signature aroma chamber, guests cleanse and relax amid an immersion of eucalyptus-impregnated steam. Also offered is gravity-defying Watsu — in short, Shiatsu massage performed in chest-high warm water with gentle, rocking movements intended to release stress on the spine and organs while quieting the mind.
The Accommodations
Lodgings include high-end Jacuzzi suites, A-frame chalets, shared- bath singles and carpeted Tentalows — glorified 12" x 12" tents equipped with electricity, twin beds, clothes racks and plenty of fresh, coffee-scented mountain air.
