A trip to New York's Catskill Mountains may conjure images of Sid Caesar sooner than Deepak Chopra, but wellness, detoxification and spiritual well-being are more than mere punch lines at the New Age Health Spa. On 280 wildflower- and waterfall-covered acres, the retreat's white clapboard buildings (named for regional Indian tribes) evoke a country-casual vibe. That ambience extends to New Age's nature-communing activities, which include hiking, cross-country skiing and bird-watching. And with its rope ladders, swinging logs and scores of precarious foot- and hand-holds, a 50-foot Alpine Tower challenges guests to hone both their athletic and problem-solving skills while attempting to ascend.
The Services
But New Age's wellness programs go beyond glorified boot-camp sessions. An on-site gym offers a full circuit of strength training and cardio-vascular equipment, as well as plenty of personal trainers to display their safe and effective use. Guests strive to enhance flexibility and muscle tone with classes in aerobics, martial arts, Pilates and African healing dance. In the heated indoor pool, guests dip into Ai Chi, a Japanese form of water stretching; outside, organized kite-flying sessions lift both spirits and heart rates.
The retreat's 10,000-foot Cayuga Yoga and Meditation Center specializes in spiritual practices with a focus on the Eastern healing arts. Therapeutic treatments rely on essential oils and herbs to enhance overall well-being and balance; bodywork specialties include mud wraps, maple sugar polishes, chakra-balancing and gemstone therapies, hydro-colon cleansing treatments, purifying sweat lodge ceremonies and Tarot card readings.
The Accommodations
Guests stay in one of five lodges, ranging from rustic mid-size rooms with private showers to larger, country inn-style suites with king beds, full baths and separate sitting areas. All are simply but tastefully appointed — and all are smoke-, TV- and telephone-free.
