|
Meet Jeff Archibald, a 32-year-old personal trainer who began rock climbing in a suitable locale: Boulder, Colo. Now based in Southern California, Archibald enjoys indoor climbing, where he doesn't have to worry about the slipsjust the sweat.
Rock Climbing Facts:
- Rock climbing routes for beginners tilt in at a 15-degree angle, so newcomers don't have to start on a completely vertical wall.
- Risk at indoor rock climbing facilities is substantially reduced because many of the variables are eliminated. Light levels remain constant, and climbers don't have to deal with wind or erosion; also, padded mats are placed on the floor to minimize the risk of injury.
- Chalk bags used in climbing are the same as those used by gymnasts, and for the same reasonsto absorb perspiration and improve grip.
- "Bouldering" is a method of rock climbing that is typically done close to the ground but without the security of a rope.
