Learn to Surf

Have you ever wondered what it feels like to ride the waves, shoot the curl, or hang ten?

Invented by the ancient Hawaiians, the sport of surfing is popular just about everywhere there are ocean waves. But what's the best way for a first-timer to get involved?

Surfing legend Corky Carroll, whose numerous titles include five-time US Overall Champion, three-time International Professional Champion, and a number one ranking from Surfer Magazine, runs a surf school in Huntington Beach, Calif. He offers the following tips for first-time surfers.

  • Check out surf school. Before you go out and invest a lot of money in equipment, you should find out if surfing is really the sport for you. The best way to do this is to head to a surf school and take a lesson or two. This way, you'll be able to see what it's all about before you go all out.

  • Go for a big board. According to Carroll, you can't learn to surf on a small board. Make sure you buy your first surfboard at a reputable surf shop where the owner understands that beginners need to start out on big boards. If a hotshot employee talks you into a little 5-foot board like the pros use, you're not going to be able to learn.

  • Wet suit and booties. In cold water areas such as California, you'll need to wear a full wetsuit and booties—especially in the winter. In summer, or in warmer waters, you can get away with wearing a partial suit called a "spring suit," or even a wet suit vest. Together with your board and a bar of wax, that's all you need to hit the waves. After that, surfing is free, and there are few activities as exhilarating.
