Nothing refreshes the spirit quite like a weekend mini-vacation.

Weekend Getaway

Stuck in a rut? Feeling run down? Longing for some excitement and adventure? Nothing refreshes the spirit and recharges the batteries quite like a weekend mini-vacation. With a little planning and a lot of imagination, you can enjoy the perfect getaway and come back both soothed and energized.

Cynthia Muchnick is a travel writer from Newport Beach, California. A former columnist for Honeymoon magazine and the author of 3 books including 101 Ways to Pop the Question, she gives us her expert tips for taking the perfect weekend getaway vacation:

  • Long weekends. Muchnick suggests taking a Friday or Monday off of work and creating your own long weekend. This is much easier and more enjoyable than fighting the crowds on a National Holiday weekend, when everyone has the same day off.

  • Close destinations. She advises picking a travel destination that's within an hour's drive or an hour's flying time. This way you'll spend more time enjoying your destination and less time in transit.

  • Packing. Packing light is essential, so try to get everything in a single duffel bag or pull-along suitcase. Pack neutral colors like black, tan and white so you can mix and match to maximize outfit combinations. Also, make sure you have a safe place in your luggage to store all your paperwork, tickets and other documents.

  • Reservations. Make your dinner reservations in advance so you won't have to wait for a table in a crowded restaurant or get stuck eating too early or too late.

  • Relaxation. The point of a weekend getaway is to have fun and relax, so don't run yourself ragged by over scheduling a million and one activities. You don't have to do and see everything that your destination offers; it's far more important to just have a pleasant time and avoid stress.

  • Spontaneity. Muchnick is a firm believer in planning and reservations, but also urges travelers to be spontaneous when they can. Don't be afraid to throw away the schedule, go with the flow, and see where the road takes you. If you find out on a Thursday that you can have Friday off, hop in the car and drive somewhere for the weekend. You might just surprise yourself with an amazing memory or two.
